Why do people continue to protest abortion when legally it is not murder or killing?

That's going by the letter of the law, but ignoring ethics. There are countries in which stoning is legal, and I'm sure there are anti-stoning people there who oppose it on the basis of ethics instead of legality, just like people who oppose abortion here do so on a basis of ethics instead of legality.
