How do I get out of an mental abuse marriage with children?

I have children and I don't know if I can leave with my children. Is it legal? I can't afford a divorce right now but i don't want to look neglectful or be penalized in the eyes of a judge for leaving my marriage with my kids? are there any lawyers out there that can give me advice?
