Is my friend a selfish and ego-centric?

An old friend who Ive not seen in a year (lives in India) is mad at me as I didn't mail him back after he sent out a group-mail of photos of his newborn son. He says i need a 'damn good reason' to explain why in the 2 months since, I didn't reply to the group e-mail... I've sent him lots of emails in all of the last year, but he never even wrote back to me he was going to have a kid! Is my friend being selfish here? Does have the right to say he is 'hurt and dissapointed' in this case?
