Why cant the Wii serve as a WiFi access point?

I have internet on my Wii, but I am using an LAN adapter, and I was wondering why it wont serve as an access point for any of my computers or my DS? If it is linked directly to the internet, wouldnt it be the default router? And why doesnt the LED flash when using Nintendo WFC?
