On a New Mexico DWI arrest, what kind of technicality would get dismissed out of magistrate court, then sent?

to district court? I heard about this from a friend, but he wasn't sure what the technicality was his lawyer found. I'm not sure if it's bad for the police or bad for my friend since it got sent to district court. He was told by the judge that he could choose to plead guilty and get no jail time, but his lawyer advised him not to do that. He did as his lawyer said, and now the case has been moved to district court. As I said at the top, I'm just wondering what the technicality is that got a magistrate court dismissal, but got the case moved to district court, and if it's bad for my friend or the police.
