How can I speak in tongue?
The term is "tongues" which means languages. During Pentecost and on other occasions, the new Christians spoke in languages that they had never studied. (acts 2:1-12) Lots of people heard the disciples preach in their own language. It became the "sign" that people had been saved during the early times of the church. Now days, speaking in tongues is a gift of the Holy Spirit which allows a person to pray using a language they have not studied. It is usually done in the privacy of one's own home, but some denominations do it all together in church. It is kind of like a special communication with God when you run out of words in English to pray with. (lots of people will not get this concept.) What your dad did was just a mimic of what it sounds like. People do not speak in tongues unless they have specifically asked for that gift. Check out 1 Corinthians 12 for the complete list of gifts one can ask for. As for wondering if the Holy spirit was trying to tell you something, if you didn't understand it then it wasn't the Holy spirit. He always supplies an interpretation into your language.
