Do you think our society's tendency to excessively coddle young children is in some way responsible for?

Yeah, maybe. I don't think I'd call this 'coddling children' though, really children should be protected. It's more not teaching them critical thinking or how to cope with failure as they grow up and having delusional ideas about economics and history.
